In a lecture on “the political responsibility for a Euro-Atlantic
future,” Reeker said that political leaders are spending time blaming
each other for the impasse in which the country finds itself instead of
rolling up their sleeves and sitting down at the table in order to find a
solution.
“The fact is that it doesn’t matter which Entity progressed more or
less in harmonising with EU standards. BiH is and will remain a
sovereign, single state, and it will either progress on its road to the
EU and NATO as a single state or it will not progress at all,” Reeker
said.
He feels that failures in BiH are a direct consequence of the
political games played by the leaders who forgot that they are primarily
accountable to citizens.
“At the moment, there are two problems which are blocking BiH’s
progress. For NATO, BiH needs to register military property needed by
the Defence Ministry and the Armed Forces, while for the EU, it needs to
implement the Sejdic-Finci decision which stipulates abolition of
discrimination towards non-constituent peoples who are not allowed to
hold office in the BiH Presidency and the House of Peoples,” Reeker
said.
He stressed that the US remains engaged in BiH and wants to see this country succeed.
“Our message to your politicians and government officials is clear
and consistent: keep meeting the assumed obligations and return to
reforms, and we will support you in the next step towards membership in
the EU and NATO,” Reeker said.
He called on young people to get engaged more in political life and
try to have their voice heard either by way of various activities or by
way of social networks.
