Officials say four people died in Croatia and one in Serbia as a result
of blizzards that forced authorities to close airports and roads.
Vehicles were stranded for hours on a major Serbian highway following a snowstorm that dumped 50 centimeters of snow.
In Vojvodina in northern Serbia, some motorists were forced to wait in
their cars for up to 18 hours before being rescued from snow-blocked
roads.
Firefighters and army troops have been called out to participate in rescue efforts.
Blizzards were also recorded in Slovenia and Bosnia.
