Dukic: We will not forsake truth

BANJALUKA – The president of the Republika Srpska Association of Former Camp Inmates, Branislav Dukic, and the Serbian people will never forsake their determination to get to the truth about the sufferings of the Serbian people in the last war in BiH, or the prosecution of those responsible for the crimes committed against the Serbs at Silos and other concentration camps.

“The Serbian people have never gone forth to conquer other peoples lands, yet always have suffered in wars. We will never forsake our determination to get to the truth, which must needs be come to the surface, for history will have to be written based on the truth, not lies,” Dukic told SRNA.

He said it is no accident that Silos – one of the most infamous camps in BiH – was closed on this day, as was Auschwitz 70 years ago.

“In Auschwitz Jews and Serbs were killed, and in Silos Serbs, for whom history always repeated itself. If appears that the BiH Prosecution have halted their investigation against 455 persons for war crimes committed against Serbs in camps in Sarajevo not wanting to remember these facts and bring those responsible to justice,” concluded Dukic.

Over 600 Serbian civilians were held in the BiH Army-run Silos camp in Tarcin near Sarajevo. Twenty-four died of the tortures and ill-treatment – including starvation – suffered at the hands of their gaolers.

Silos was opened on May 11, 1992 in a structure used previously for storing wheat, and was closed on January 27, 1996, on St. Sava’s Day – two months after the Dayton peace accords were signed.

It closed on the same day as the infamous Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz. According to former inmates, Silos was in many respects reminiscent of Auschwitz.

For the most part, Silos – one of 126 concentration camps in war-time Sarajevo – held civilians from the areas of Tarcin, Pazaric and the vicinity.

The BiH Prosecution recently informed the Republika Srpska Interior Ministry of their decision to halt the investigation against 455 persons for war crimes committed in Silos, the May 9 Elementary School, Krupa, Igman and Hrasnica, where Serbs died/were killed from May, 1992 to January 27, 1996.
